Description

An archaeological evaluation undertaken in October 2002 at Carden Park prior to the construction of new buildings and landscaping of the grounds as part of a leisure complex. Five trenches were opened. Trenches 4 and 5 were located on the former site of Carden Hall, trenches 2 and 3 were located in the area to the south and east of the site of the old hall but in the area of the new build, and trench 1 was located in the area to be landscaped. Structural remains were uncovered in two of the trenches (4 and 5), these appear to relate to a late Victorian building phase of the hall. No structural evidence for earlier halls was discovered, although trench 3 revealed a ditch, interpreted as a soakaway, which contained brick debris, potentially demolition debris of an earlier phase of hall.
