June 2016
Description
Between the 1st and 3rd June 2016, eleven evaluation trenches were excavated across two fields, with five trenches revealing archaeological features including ditches and quarrying. All five of these trenches were located in northernmost field and included three linear
ditches, and evidence for two possible stone quarrying pits to the west. The ditches probably represent boundary features, one of which can clearly be identified on the tithe map of 1842. The quarry features cannot be closely dated but contained pottery likely to date from between the Roman and medieval periods. The paucity of features and associated finds suggests the land has never been subjected to intensive occupation and has probably been in agricultural use for a considerable period of time.
