Description

On various dates between Thursday 21st April and Monday 02nd May 2016 an archaeological watching brief and recording programme was undertaken during sewer repair works at Little Abbey Gateway, off Northgate Street, Chester. The works involved the excavation of two trenches west of Little Abbey Gateway along the line of the existing sewer, to repair damaged sections of the ceramic pipe that were causing pollution and internal flooding. A 4m section of 255mm dia. sewer was replaced approximately 4m northwest of Little Abbey Gateway, along with a 3m section 11.5m northwest, with both sections being at a depth of approximately 3m. As the trenches were excavated through ground previously disturbed during the initial installation of the existing sewer, no archaeological deposits of interest, features or artefacts were encountered during the watching brief.
