Description

This archaeological assessment considers land to the east of Chester city centre, Cheshire, approximately 2.54ha in area which is being proposed for mixed use development. The assessment has established that there are no designated or undesignated heritage assets of high importance situated within the study site. The study site is situated on the Roman road heading east from the Roman fort and settlement at Chester and may contain peripheral settlement and agricultural activity of this period. Although the study site is situated beyond the Saxon and Medieval limits of the town and the adjacent extramural settlement, the site may contain evidence of Medieval agricultural practices and it is uncertain whether Medieval settlement activity continued along the street frontage of Boughton. This assessment has therefore identified a potential for Roman and Medieval archaeological deposits to be present within the study site. However, the survival of such deposits is dependant upon the impact and ground disturbance caused by extensive 19th and 20th century development.
