Description
In April 2016, ahead of a proposed extension, car park and associated landscaping, Earthworks Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation on land at Ashton House Nursery, Cheshire (centring on NGR SJ 5065693). The site lies close to the remains of an important and scheduled medieval kiln. Accordingly, the aim of the evaluation was to investigate and characterise the extent, survival and date of any surviving archaeology prior to development. .
Following a geophysical survey, four trial trenches were excavated. Large marl pits (probably) dating to the post-medieval period were the only features identified, and overall the results have demonstrated clearly that the site holds little archaeological potential.
