Description

This report outlines the results of a phase of Archaeological monitoring carried out during Geothechnical Investigations at Bridge Street, Warrington. These works were monitored by L – P : Archaeology on behalf of Orion Heritage between February anf March 2016. The site lies within the historic core of Warrington and evidence from previous historic research on the site suggests settlement activity from the 14th century through to the 20th century. A total of five window samples and three test pits were monitored within the northwestern area of the site. No significant archaeological deposits or features were encountered during the watching brief. It is clear that in cellared areas the depth of intrusion extends into the natural deposits, meaning no archaeology would survive in these areas. At road level there is potential for relic soils to remain intact at depths of over 1.6m below ground level. However the results suggest that much of the area has been impacted by post medieval development
