Description

Archaeological watching brief at the site of the Panorama Hotel, Halton. The watching brief monitored groundworks around the footprint of the old Panorama Hotel, within the southern section of the site. The uppermost deposits on the site comprised topsoil and demolition material. The hotel cellars could be seen to have remained intact following demolition and comprised brick walls in English Garden wall bond. The bulk of the excavated material on the site was demolition material from within the cellars. However, outside the cellared area the excavation revealed almost 2m of 19th century made ground, forming garden soils. At the northern extent of the excavation area, a sandstone linear feature was encountered. This was a 1.5m by 4.2 rockcut feature with a square recess cut into its face. The presence of the remants of a brick structure to the eastern edge of the feature suggest a post medieval date for its creation, though no associated deopits were envountered having been removed during 20th century car park construction.
