Description

This report outlines the results of a phase of Archaeological monitoring carried out on land off Bridge Street, Warrington. These works were monitored by L – P : Archaeology on behalf of Orion Heritage between July and October 2015. The site lies within the historic core of Warrington and evidence from previous archaeological investigations on the site suggested settlement activity from the 14th century. Two Areas were monitoried during this phase of works. Area 1, The area of Academy Street produced features associated with the Wire Works dating from the 19th century. Area 2 near Bank Street and Horrocks Lane produced a variety of sub-soil features dating from the 14th century to the 18th century. Two of the pits were of Medieval date, 14th to 15th century. Two ditches and a small pit of Medieval date between 14th to 15th century, traversed the northern area. These earlier features are an indication of a deep stratigraphy likely to exist underneath the town centre.
