Description
Historic Building Survey undertaken prior to the demolition to of The Ship Victory public house.
Documentary, cartographic and Structural evidence have enabled a piecing together of the history of the The Ship Victory and the building today that has evolved since c 1833.
The public house that survived in 2015 is clearly the result of c1889 rebuilding work and 1970s internal refurbishment. While the brewery maintained the Olde Worlde style in the bar area, the upper floors were converted into a large flat for the use of the licensee
The exterior of the building has some architectural merit with what is believed to be the pre 1889 corner door and triple-pane windows at ground floor level and the use of terracotta in the 1889 building work
The Ship Victory has played its part in the social history of the development of Gorse Stacks and the large scale terraced housing built in the second decade of the 19th century. The public house had the reputation of being the only license premises named after Nelsons Flagship in the country.
The building had not received statuatory protection and although sited within a Conservation area, its demolition has become inevitable prior to demolition, hence the record by building recording.
