Description

Wardell Armstrong Archaeology was commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of residential development of land at the Meadows, Northwich. A total of 12 trenches were undertaken across the site between 9th - 13th Novemeber 2015. Most contained land drains of varying forms reflecting the fact that the site is low lying and part of the River Dane flood plain. No archaeological were recorded in any of the trenches located on the flood plain. The majority of trenches showed that topsoil covered sandy alluvial deposits as a result of flood events and the meandering course of the River Dane. Only one trench (trench 11) contained significant archaeological features in the form of pits, a stone and wood constructed drain and a narrow linear feature. This trench was located on the extreme south-west edge of the flood plain where the bluff starts to rise. The features that could be dated had a late 19th to early 20th century date. (1)
