Description

Research and recording carried out by the Cheshire Gardens Trust at Mere Court Hotel. A house built in the Arts and Crafts style, c1903, designed by Frank B Dunkerley, with surrounding garden in keeping with the style of house, thought to be designed by Thomas H Mawson. The house is grade II listed (List entry Number: 1139522). There is a “blanket” tree preservation order on the site (Cheshire East; 25-010; 31 05 1996). The garden is largely as detailed on the OS 1910 map with little alteration in layout. No garden plans have been traced. The house has been extended to provide additional hotel accommodation. The stables have been extended and converted into a conference centre. Principal remaining features Terrace wall (or ha-ha); Pond behind the house; Formal garden feature in front of the house; Path between stone walls topped with shrubs; Orchard on original site; Remains of a rose garden which may or may not have been original; Site of the former kitchen garden; Trees and shrubs, many of which date back to the time of the original landscaping.
