Description
A programme of archaeological watching brief and test pitting was carried out in relation to proposed landscaping works at an overall site known as Chester Business Quarter. 3 areas were looked at.
Area 1 in the Chester Station Car park identified only a low density and complexity of late post medieval deposits and features within the development area. Accordingly, it is judged unlikely that the development of the site will have an adverse impact upon any significant archaeology.
Area 2 is the public realm area to the front of the railway station where archaeological test pits have identified widespread late post medieval/ early modern surfaces and structural remians associated with the development iof the Chester general railway station. These remains were encountered at shallow depths below current ground level and accordingly, there is potential for any development to have an adverse impact on these remains.
Area 3 is site of the WWII railway bunker control room. Following the demolition of the above ground remains, the foundations of the structure were found to extend to a depth of 1m.
