Description
The site lies within the township of Eaton within the parish of Eccleston. A Roman road was recorded on the southern side of Heron's Way during development work for the Chester Business Park (MBNA Lakeside Development) running east to west. The road was associated with two Romano-British circular structures and a rectilinear field system that seems to have been maintained for the management of livestock. Historic mapping shows the site as being entirely within one large enclosed field to the south of a farmstead labelled as 'Hilliards' in c.1839 (this is shown as 'Wrexham Road Farm' on later maps). The objectives of the Watching Brief were to determine the presence or absence of archaeological deposits or remains and to record the character, date, location and preservation of any archaeological remains on the site. A relict ploughsoil was identified across a large part of the site and this consistently produced artefacts of Post Medieval date. No earlier archaeological deposits or artefacts were identified during the course of the Watching Brief.
