Description
Watching brief held during groundworks as part of a garden conversion. A wall trench c 8.8m long and 0.6m wide was excavated and a number of post medieval structural remains were observed. These remains are likely to be outbuildings identified on earlier architects drawings. The property is located less than 100 metres west of the site of the Roman Fortress and is within the boundary of the later medieval city walls and over the site of a former Benedictine friary. With the exception of the structural remains, no other significant archaeological features were observed during this Watching Brief. This is most likely due to the limitation of the excavated trench and its shallow depth below a substantial layer of modern hardcore and tarmac. However, given the location of the site in the heart of a former medieval monastic complex it is still likely that significant archaeological features still survive in the local and wider area.
