Description
In test-pit 1 soil layers potentially dating to the Roman period were encountered at a depth of c. 0.70m below current ground level. In test-pit 2 a sequence of fills to a potential ditch or pit, producing finds of Roman period pottery, were encountered at a depth of c. 0.75m below current ground level, these fills extended to a depth of c. 1.4m.
The foundations to the Ship Victory public house were exposed in both test-pits; these were of a shallow nature in test-pit 1 but were deeper in test-pit 2 reflecting the presence of a cellar.
