Description

An evaluation and watching brief along the line of the new Crewe Green South Link Road. The watching brief was successful in characterising the archaeology which survived within the development. The dominant type of feature was agricultutal historic filed boundaries and drainage ditches. The latter were probably inserted due to the often waterlogged ground conditions and poorly draining substrata. The evaluation was successful in identifying the location of the tailrace of Crotia Mill in trench 1. The Mill tailrace was excavated and characterised revealing that it did not feature any stone structures, but rather that it was a simple 'hand cut' diversion of the Basford Brook. Lack of artefactual evidence means that dating is difficult. Additional linear features may represent drainage gullies but are again difficult to date with no artefacts. No other significant archaeological remains aside from features relating to post medieval agricultural landscape.
