Description

Test pitting and a level II historic building survey was carried out on structures relating to the disused airfield at Wardle, Cheshire. Test pitting revealed a thick topsoil layer, overlying the natural subsoils of the area. All finds were recovered from the topsoil and comprised a prime example of 20th century waste. No archaeologically significant finds or deposits were encountered. A total of 29 structures were identified associated with the airfields original layout. Of these, three were located outside the site boundary, However, for thoroughness these have been included in the survey. The structures can be divided into types: Control Tower and ancillary buildings, defensive structures, training buildings, store buildings, hangars and ancillary buildings, Accomodation and offices.
