Description

A dendrochronological analysis of a large assemblage of oak timbers from a medieval saltmaking site in Nantwich has produced a long well replicated tree-ring chronology. The archaeological features on the site contained timbers felled at various times in the 12th-16th centuries with most activity concentrated in the later 13th and early 14th centuries. A large "salt ship" ( not a river craft but a cistern for storing brine) is od later 13th century date, two barrels are probably of mid-14th century date. A further pair of barrels are identified as co-eval and of the same source but no tree-ring match has been located for the series produced from them.
