Description
A watching brief was undertaken in two stages in October and November 2014. It was prompted by the digging of trenches for an electric cable for a new lighting system, in order to illuminate the footpath that runs across St Mary's churchyard. Deposits dating from the mid 18th century were encountered. Fragmentary and unarticulated human skeletal remains of several individuals were recovered. Tha nature and position of the bones, close to the present ground surface of the cemetery, indicates that they are the disturbed remains of individuals, probably initially exposed and re-deposited when the path was constructed.
