Description
Research and recording carried out by the Cheshire Gardens Trust at Over Tabley Hall. House of 1760 in ‘Gothick’ style, a remodelling of the E range of an earlier hall which was demolished during C19
Main features of the associated landscape park (c.1760-1820) have been lost:
- 2 ornamental lakes were drained and open parkland changed for agricultural use: c.1820-50;
- Woodlands separated from the site by the construction of M6 motorway: 1960s;
- remaining open aspects threatened by new A556 Road Scheme: 2015 start of construction
Principal remaining features:
- House (Grade II) of 1760: an early and rare example of the ‘Strawberry Hill’ Gothick style, Cheshire’s “only exterior that could be called Rococo”, and the only known surviving building by painter/architect John Astley. Renovated and restored to its original width from 2007.
- Walls of walled garden with triangular buttresses, probably C172 and documented from 1849.
- Unusually large field E of the house, last remains of the former designed landscape.
- C17 stables/farm building (Grade II), on ‘buildings at risk’ list, now in separate ownership.
