Description
Research and recording carried out by the Cheshire Gardens Trust at Stonecroft, Appleton. A house built in the early 1900s with gardens designed by Thomas Mawson. Principal remaining features are unknown as no permission to visit the garden was granted. 2010 aerial imagery allows some interpretation of remaining features. Research finds that house built for Frederick William Monks, iron master of Warrington and Mawson was commissioned the design the garden. Plans for the garden exist in Cumbria Record Offic eand describe layout of the garden which sits on a standstone bluff, 70m above sea level. Site now has a new build on the site of the former stable block and the driveway altered to accomodate a new access to this building.
