Description
A series of geo-technical investiagations comprising bore holes, window samples and trial pits were carried out on the site. These works were monitored by L-P Archaeology on behalf of CGMS Consulting between 22nd April and 9th May 2014. The site lies within the historic core of Warrington and cartographic evidence shows that it has been occupied since at least the 16th century. It is likely that the area was settled by the 11th century at a location where the river Mersey was fordable. The first recorded bridge leading to the site area across the river dates to the 14th century.
The results of the archaeological monitoring shows that there is a great deal of made ground on the site, with Post Medieval layers extending over 2m below ground level. It is clear that a mojority of these deposits realte to the use of the site as a gas works in the post medieval period. However, one borehole observed duggests that early post medieval deposits do survive in areas of the site, direvtly overlaying the natural.
