Description
Archaeological strip and map exercise ahead of the construction of a new Lifestyle Centre on Land off Forge Street/ Henry Street, Crewe. Initial plans were to create a single trench aimed at targeting a single dwelling within a row of terraced properties erected in the 19th century and demolished in the mid 20th century. The results of the initial trench demonstrated that the demolition of the terraced properties that were once located towards the east end of the development site had been extensive, leaving very little below-ground evidence. Accordingly, following discussions, two smaller and limited areaa of excavation were opened towards the west end of the site. The results of these further areas of investigation proved that foundations to the properties formerly located here had survived demolition. Additionally, a rapid watching brief completed during initial groundwork's towards the west end of this site revealed further remains, including yard area and a cobbled area.
