Description

Archaeological watching brief and strip and map excavation undertaken during January 2014 on the site of a proposed student accomodation development on land at Crewe Street, Chester. The site was developed during the railway age in the ninetheeth century and until recently it was occupied by Chester Bus Depot. The fieldwork uncovered the remains of the earliest railway terminus constructed in the 1840s. These buildings were enlarged and adapted as Wagon repair works following the opening of the Chester General Railway Station, on its current site, in 1848. The buildings continued in use as warehouses until the later 20th century when they were demolished during further development and adaptation of the site as a Bus Depot. The remains of the early railway building will be preserved beneath the new building.
