Description

Archaeological monitoring carried out at the Countess of Chester Country Park during works to establish a site compound and the excavations for new paths. The work was carried out as part of a condition for planning permission which has been granted for the change of use of the site area to form a new Country Park. Historic research suggests that the site contains Finchett’s Gutter, an ancient watercourse which was part of a network used to mark the historic township boundaries of Chester. To the north and north-west boundaries of the site of Roman, Medieval and Post Medieval artefacts have been found and to the west of the site lies the Roman road leading from Chester to the Wirral. No archaeological features were encountered during this phase of the archaeological monitoring.
