Description
Evaluation trenching in land labelled as Compartment A in the desk based assessment for the proposed Jubilee Wood, Eccleston. Five trenches were opened in the southern part of the area. The area has seen considerable recent agricultural activity and extensive dumping and in-filling of depressions with rubbish. Since 1985 all the internal boundaries have been grubbed out and ditches in-filled. Two ditches were however located in the northern area excavated which may be early field boundaries or related to the Roman road. The large amounts of late material which had been dumped in the corresponding stretch of trench 1 makes it impossible to know whether or not these ditches did originally connect with Eaton Road, and/or the Roman Road but their presence here but not further west may imply that they were part of a long-lived field-scape fronting the road, broadly comparable to the area of ridge and furrow mostly lost to the A55 in the 1970s. The overall level of disturbance and dumping of rubbish has reduced the potential perceived in the dba in this area.
