Description

Research excavation by Cheshire Archaeological society under the supervision of LP archaeology comprising of two trenches in a field to the east of the Old Rectory, Eaton road, Eccleston. The results of the excavations support the previously proposed theories that there has been activity around Eccleston since at least the Medieval period, with additional evidence of Roman activity. The sire revealed 13th to 14th century agricultrual activity, 16th to 17th century structures and agricultural soil, 18th to 19th century field boundaries and plough soils, as well as modern ploughing and services. It is thought that the 16th to 17th century structures may be crifters dwellings or animal pens that had been robbedd out in the 18th century
