Site Event/Activity record ECH5601 - Excavations at Grosvenor Park, Chester in 2012-2013 (Training)

Excavations carried out in partnership with Chester University between 2012 and 2013, representing the sixth/seventh years of the student training excavation in Grosvenor Park, undertaken as part of the Chester Amphitheatre Environs Research/CAER Project. The excavations (2012) recorded the remains of a substantial masonry structure with attached buttresses; it was badly robbed, apparently after the destruction of the later mansion (Chomondeley's Mansion) in the 17th century. This structure could represent the north-east corner of the medieval chapel of St Anne. Extensive evidence for Cholmondeley’s mansion, particularly the phase of the structure demolished following the Civil War, has been located. A timber-framed building stood in the area of Trench IV. It had a brick hearth and a drain. A large Tudor rubbish pit was excavated in 2007 adjacent to this building. Further ranges of the building appear to have extended west and south. The widespread demolition debris over these structures was rich in finds of the 16th and 17th century. (1-2)
