Description
During 1989 an oil spillage in the Mersey produced a greater awareness of the Mersey Waterline which combined with the collapse of a clay bung which sealed the entrance to the chamber led to the start of the sites discovery. Liverpool Museums were notified and they in turn invited the NWSIAH ( now Merseyside Industrial Heritage Society) to carry out exploratory excavations.
