Description
Visit to the site in order to examine a collapsed section of churchyard wall between the northern extension to the cemetery and the adjoining bowling green to the east (north of the scheduled motte). The wall had collapsed down to ground level along a stretch measuring c 6m and was leaning precariously beyon the current extent of the collapse. The wall was of sandstone construction with a loose rubble core containing many voids and was capped by large, dressed coping stones. A subsequent examination of the historic mapping showed that this part of the cemetery and the wall were not in existence at the time of the tithe map (1840s) but were both in existence by the time that the OS first edietion 25" map was published (c 1880).
