Description

The farmhouse of Elm Tree Farm is an attractive Grade II listed building on the outskirts of Elworth, just to the west of Sandbach in south-east Cheshire. Despite the listing details suggesting that the building was a brick building of the early-mid 19th century, at its core is a three-bay early-17th century timber-framed house. The house has been the home of the same family for around two hundred years at least and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. Over this time there have been changes to the building as needs and aspirations developed and this process will also inevitably continue. This Consultancy was commissioned to undertake an archaeological and historical study of the building in order to inform decisions that will need to be made regarding any future alterations to the property. This is in line with the guidelines of the government’s recent Planning Policy Statement No.5. The level of analysis and recording within this report is equivalent to the Level 2/3 of the English Heritage guidelines of 2006.1 However, much of the historic fabric remains hidden behind external brick and internal plaster finishes.
