Description

A group of interments was discovered in the plot of land immediately opposite the main entrance to Chester Castle, in 1939, during construction of an ARP shelter. Traces of 8 graves were found, but skeletons remained in only two. Each grave was formed of thin slabs of local sandstone, placed on edge and was completely covered with slabs. Three types of outline were found - rectangular, tapering towards the foot and with a recess for the head. They were probably of C13, C14 and C15 date (1).
