Description

A Roman lead coffin with an inhumation, in association with Roman pottery, dating to not later than the third century, was found during construction work immediately north-east of the Northgate Roundabout in 1984 (1, 2, 3). The burial found by contractors during the laying of surface water drains at the western end of the site, some 220m beyond the north gate. By the time archaeologists arrived on site, the coffin had already been removed from the ground, significantly damaged in the process, and the human remains were disarticulated.
