Description

The construction of the Roodee Gas Works took place in different stages, the north and south gasometers were erected in 1885 - 1886, and a third later erected in 1887 to the south near Wilcox's Point. Roman finds were reported from the site of Gasometer North, including a pig of lead. Excavations recorded an assemblage of Roman pottery and some animal bone, dated by a pig of lead to AD 74 (1) (3) (4). Four human skulls are also reported (6). Also found during these excavations for gas works was 'a number of oaken piles… About 50 yards distant from the river, found in a bed of river gravel' which appeared to have once been a pier. The skulls were found at this location (5).
