Description

Following on from ECH5106 in Shipgate St., a formal excavation of the site was undertaken in 1983 (1). At 3.3m below the surface (so below the depth that the previous excavation had reached and found no archaeological remains), a sequence of Roman structures and deposits were recorded, including a well preserved junction of Roman mains and culverts falling southwards to the River Dee, likely dating to the first or second centuries. These were followed by a substantial Roman building and a metalled road (1).
