Description

Excavation to the rear of the street frontage revealed a series of medieval rubbish pits and extensive traces of Roman buildings. In the first century the method of construction used was timber framing with wattle and daub infill, in one instance set on a horizontal sill beam at ground level. In around 100 AD the site was levelled and redeveloped with a more substantial sandstone foundation structure. Early in the third century the site was again cleared and another substantial building was erected. Parts of the courtyard and eastern portico of this were examined. It remained in use until the late fourth century (1).
