Description

Antiquarian survey of the City Walls in 1850 primarily focussing on the evidence for Roman remains. Survey begins at the Kaleyard Gate and continuing in a northerly direction. Several specific sites were chosen for further investigation including the Kaleyard Gate, to the east of the Northgate and at the Roodee (1). Watkin refutes Smith's claim that Roman evidence was clearly present in these locations as subsequent work has noted evidence of medieval foundations at the Kaleyard site at least (2).
