Description

Repairs to the cloisters of Chester Cathedral, beginning at some time around 1913, prevented the collapse of this part of the structure. The roof was replaced entirely, and it was found that the pockets of groining there were filled with tons of sediment and debris, including masonry belonging to earlier buildings, perhaps to parts of the Norman church (1). From the areas of the Vestibule and the Maiden's Aisle alone, about 550 tons of sediment and 80 tons of broken masonry was removed; as of 1915, much of this broken masonry was being stored in the Norman Vaulted Chamber (2).
