Description

Stukely notes a hypocaust and fragments of cornice and column bases of a very large building were observed on Market Square at the Great House against the Shambles in 1776 (1). Other reports state that this discovery was made in 1725, and specifies the location as the west side of Market Square, Cholmondeley House, later Hewitt's, and Lawton's Carriage Works (2). Watkin examined the cellar in 1885 but found no evidence of Roman remains and he suggests the material was re-used in the restoration of the City Walls, specifically in the North wall. (3)
