Description
Northgate Street East, 1865: Roman flooring recorded in 16-18 Northgate Street. At the 'Chester House', in the southeast corner of the premises on the north side of the lower passage to St Werburgh St. The flooring was a black and white tessellated paving, and a herringbone tile paving (1, 5).
St Mary's without the Walls, Handbridge, 1885: At the east end of a ditch cut for a drain, connecting the church with the main road, seven interments of burnt human remains and one cinerary urn were found in a large pit (1, 3, 4). An assemblage of pottery and two coins were found during the excavation of the foundations of the church that same year.
Snuff Mills, 1885: Aureus found (2), of Titus found during excavations for a drain (1).
Newgate St., 1885: Two early third century stamped tiles were found to the rear of the house belonging to James Taylor, surgeon (1).
Roodee, 1885/6: Mattock of red deer antler recorded.
