Description

Survey carried out within the grounds associated with Beeston Castle, commissioned by the Habitats and Hillforts Landscape Partnership scheme in 2009. The aims of the survey were twofold. Firstly to provide training in archaeological geophysical survey techniques ad secondly to investigate the area of the castle green adjacent to Chapel Lane, between the gatehouse and the quarry. The results of the Fluxgate Gradiometer and resistivity Surveys have defined a number og anomalies which appear to reflect possible activity on the site. The line of the old access road to the castle has been defined together with at least two ffootpaths crossing the survey area. A number of other anomalies may relate to previous agricultural activity on the site and a large magnetic anomaly, of uncertain origins has now been defined.
