Description

Morgan's Mount is a mural tower of medieval origin on the northern side of Chester's City Wall. It is a rectangular solid structure built of sandstone rising one level above the wall walk. It has shown signs of structural distress for many years. During 2010 as a preliminary to restoration, engineering investigations and archaeological evaluation were carried out to examine the causes of this distress and also the nature of the internal structure of the tower. The investigations found that the tower has a complex internal structure with medieval fill and structure having survived post medieval remodelling. Extensive voiding was revealed and the fill of the structure has become separated from the external walls and percolating water has washed material though the interior of the tower.
