Description

The archaeological investigation comprised monitoring of ground works to the northern corner of the site during demolition works of an existing building and the excavation for footings for a new building on the site. A secondary phase of monitoring was carried out on drainage trenches excavated through the car park at its northern edge. The excavations within the foundations of the toilet block revealed that the footings comprised a thin raft comprising modern tile over hardcore and sand, extending to a combined depth of 0.3m. These foundations overlay an earlier, undated, topsoil. The excavations for the inspection hatches were carried out within the limits of previously excavated trenches. Since neither of the previous drainage trenches required bottoming the only stratigraphy revealed was prior backfill and make up, and as such no new data was recovered from these excavations.
