Description

Observations made during the dismantling of a section of the churchyard wall due to a bulge in the structure and danger of collapse. The wall stands c 1.4m above the leval of the layby adjacent to the churchyard and to the rear, within the graveyard, the present ground surface lies roughly along the top of the wall. There are no marked graves adjacent to the wall. The wall consists of sandstone blocks and, on dismantling, proved to be st into a slot cut into the sandstone bedrock (much decayed at this point. Within the churchyard, it was aparent that the sandstone continued to rise up but the overlying graveyard soil was wholly homogenous and contained no articulated burials or disarticulated bone.
