Description
A visit was made by Julie Edwards and Mark Leah to Ivy Cottage after the foundations (approx one metre) to a new rear extension had been dug. The extension spanned the width of the existing rear extension. Sections were visible in all three trenches two of which abutted the building. It could be seen that the house wall was built directly on to rock. The sections show that the trenches had been cut through degraded sandstone with bedrock visible in the base of the trench. The trench running parallel to the back of the house was cut through red clay overlying bedrock. No features could be seen cutting into the sections other than a disused post-medieval ceramic drainpipe. Some fragments of late 17th/18th century pottery (blackwares, mottled ware) were found around a disused drain in the NE corner of the foundation trench, no other artefacts were seen.
