Description

The monument is in a reasonable condition. It consists of earthwork features (banks and ditches) defining the area of the fort and below ground buried archaeology. There is no Class 1 Consent and so any ploughing would be illegal here. Permanent pasture with no ploughing is the most beneficial regime. The management of any encroaching scrub would also be advantageous. There is a problem with a tractor route across the east boundary of the site. The bank is actively being eroded here. It would be beneficial to the monument if it was feasible for the farm to have a different access route that did not involve crossing the scheduled monument. The earthwork on the south side is rather ploughed out but still visible (the dip is visible if you look at the hedge line). The telegraph pole in the background is just outside the monument. If an access route could be made beyond this point that meant the current route was not needed, this would be highly beneficial. The only other point to note is that the original entrance to the fort is thought to be visible from the hollow way (the lane) in the form of earthworks on the north west corner of the site. Hopefully erosion on this side of the lane can be avoided. SMC is not required for implementing any of the above recommendations as there would be no physical impact on the monument. However scrub clearance should consist of cutting scrub at the base and treating the stumps (no grubbing up).
