Description
This stage of the archaeological investigations comprised a Watching Brief, covering a series of remediation trenches to the south of the site area. The results of a Watching Brief on the land at the north of the site was included within an excavation report previously submitted by L – P Archaeology. The Watching Brief to the south of the site revealed a very disturbed site, where a series of three gasometers were set deep into the ground. These gasometers extended to a depth of 3.5m below present ground level and had truncated any archaeological deposits that may have been present. In some areas, an upper deposit was identified that was comprised of large sandstone block rubble and brick fragments dating to the eighteenth to twentieth centuries.
