Description
Site visit during conversion of building in order to observe ground reduction work to the rear, where there is a marked change of level between the level of the building on the High Street frontage and the garden to the rear. The aim of the exercise was to establish whether the difference was the result of the natural topography or a build up of material in the rear plots. Machine ground reduction was underway at the time of the visit and bedrock had been exposed beneath the topsoil. It was thus quite clear tha the change in levels was the result of terracing into the natural slope at the time that buildings were constructed on the High street frontage and was not due to an accumulation of archaeological strata. The same phenonenon is apparent at numerous other sites along the frontage.
