Description

Michelle Old Hall, Great Budworth: Archaeology (Ref 08/0009/FUL) This is just a short note to advise you that the Cheshire Archaeology Planning Advisory Service has now carried out two visits to the above development and has been able to observe the foundation trenches for the extensions, the groundworks to the rear, and the reduction of floor levels within the building. Little was seen in the foundation trenches of the various extensions but in the front room we were able to observe wall footings consisting of large squared sandstone blocks which were set directly onto the natural sand or in very shallow foundation trenches. To the rear of the property it is now clear that the abrupt change of slope between the level of the houses on the north side of the High Street and the rear gardens is due to cutting back into the hillside; it is not the result of hillwash piling up against the rear property boundaries as had previously been suggested. In short the development has provided a valuable opportunity to examinre the nature of the archaeological deposits within the historic settlement area and I advise that any outstanding archaeological condition may now be discharged.
