Description

Extension to Outbuilding at Church Bank, Tattenhall: Record of Site Visit (Ref 09/10086/FUL) I visited the above site (SJ 4862 5850) on 25.2.10 in order to inspect the foundation trenches for the extension to the above building, prior to their infilling with concrete. The foundation trenches had been excavated around the footprint of the extension, with an additional cross trench, to a depth of c 1.5m with a width of c 0.6m. A thin deposit (0.2m) of disturbed topsoil was seen to ovelie a thick deposit of orangey brown clay which extended to the base of the trench and was clearly natural, representing the local boulder clay. At the very base of the trench natural sandstone bedrock was present. There was no evidence of any features cut into the natural clay. Cuts for the foundation trench of the west wall of the outbuilding and disturbance associated with the retaining concrete wall along the southern edge of the extension were seen in the sections but there was nothing of archaeological interest in these exposures. Mark Leah, 25.2.10
